How much does it cost to hire an architectural designer?

As a residential architectural design firm, we provide personalized quotes for each project based on its unique style, size, and complexity. However, to help our New Zealand homeowners budget for their projects, we've simplified our fee structure to a percentage of the total build cost.

For most new residential projects, which include a site visit, concepts, resource consent drawings, building consent drawings and specifications, and building consent submission, our typical fee estimate is between 4-5% of the total project value. For example, if the construction cost of a new home is $800,000+gst, our design fee at 5% would be $40,000 + GST.

It's important to note that several factors can cause our fee percentage to vary, such as the size, complexity, and architectural features of the project. For instance, a single-storey 200m² home on a flat site will differ significantly from a 300m² multi-level home on a steep site with multiple architectural features.

It is important to be aware of the fees that our services do not cover. The fees we provide for new residential projects, which are calculated as a percentage of the total build cost, include site visits, concepts, resource and building consent drawings and specifications, and building consent submission.

However, it's essential to note that our fees exclude other consultant or council fees, such as Council Resource and Building Consent fees, Geotechnical Report, Structural Engineer, Landscape Designer, Surveyor, Kitchen, or Interior Design fees. The costs for these additional services can vary significantly depending on the specifics of your project.

Additionally, our fees do not include construction monitoring fees. If required, we can provide a separate quote for these services.

To start your project, we require a set design deposit fee of $2000 incl. GST. However, please note that this fee may vary based on your project's location and type. If there are any changes to the deposit fee, we will notify you promptly.

Once we receive the deposit, we will operate on a progress payment basis. We will work through your project, and based on the project scale, we will provide fortnightly or monthly invoices for payment. These invoices are payable within 14 days from the date of issuance.
