Deb approached Modal Architecture with a clear goal. She wanted a refined lifestyle home on a steep and constrained site in Brooklyn, Wellington. The house needed to support everyday living, provide space for entertaining, and operate as a base for her baking business. Alongside that, she required a second dwelling that could generate future income. The site itself presented significant challenges. It was split by a stream, shaped like a valley, and carried multiple compliance constraints. After several unsuccessful design attempts elsewhere, Deb was ready for a process she could trust.
We led the entire design and coordination process, resolving complexity from the outset. Deb worked with us on the internal arrangement of spaces, while we took full responsibility for the architecture and composition of the building. The result is a home that follows the contour of the hill, organised across four staggered levels and connected by a panoramic lift. Mixed claddings break down the scale of the building, bringing a visual calm. A separate studio provides self-contained privacy, while every level opens to outdoor areas that feel peaceful, private, and grounded in the landscape.
Coolidge Heights is now a carefully considered home that reflects Deb’s vision. It is elegant, generous, and quietly confident. What was once an overwhelming site is now an asset, with a home embedded in the terrain and supported by a coordinated team. The result is a complete transformation, shaped around clarity and delivered with certainty.

Working with Modal Architecture on my home has been a rewarding experience. The site was incredibly complex, but the team navigated every challenge with care and creativity. They listened when others had not, and delivered a design that reflects my lifestyle. The result is a beautifully grounded home that feels private, practical, and completely mine. My only regret was not finding Modal Architecture 18 months earlier.
