Sam is a New Zealand Registered Architect with experience spanning residential design, retirement living and projects in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Originally from the UK, Sam completed his postgraduate architectural studies at the University of Westminster before building his professional experience across both sides of the world. He is registered with the New Zealand and UK Architects Registration Boards and has developed a particular appreciation for architecture that responds thoughtfully to its setting, landscape and the people who live within it. He has also completed Passive House Institute New Zealand (PHINZ) CEPH1 training, bringing passive house design principles into his approach to low energy, comfortable and considered homes.
Alongside architecture, Sam is an artist and painter. His work is inspired by everyday scenes from around New Zealand, particularly places where the built and natural environments come together. Rather than seeking out grand landmarks, his paintings often capture familiar streets, landscapes, buildings and moments that might otherwise be overlooked. Many are drawn from places he has travelled through, his local surroundings and experiences shared with friends.
Outside the studio, Sam is happiest exploring New Zealand and spending time outdoors. He is a keen tramper and enjoys hiking, fishing and kayaking, whether heading into the hills, getting out on the water or discovering somewhere new. These experiences give him a different way of engaging with New Zealand’s landscapes and provide an ongoing source of inspiration for his creative work.
Sam has also contributed his skills beyond conventional architectural practice. His past volunteer work includes humanitarian construction, environmental citizen science with Sustainable Coastlines and design work for a primary school in Tanzania.
Across architecture, art and life outside work, Sam is interested in the relationship between people, places and the natural environment. It is a perspective that continues to shape both the buildings he helps create and the places he chooses to capture on canvas.
