The clients love living in Brooklyn, Wellington, but with their children growing and their family entering a new stage of life, they could see that their existing home would no longer meet their needs in the years ahead. As their children grow into teenagers, the family will need more bedrooms, greater privacy, better bathrooms, space for guests and a new master suite, alongside a more practical laundry and improved everyday functionality.
Just as importantly, the existing kitchen, living and dining areas were disconnected from one another and from the outdoor living spaces. The family wanted to create a more open and connected heart to the home, where cooking, dining, relaxing and outdoor living could become part of the same everyday experience.
Rather than leaving an area they love, the clients approached Modal Architecture to explore how their existing home could evolve with their family.
The renovation and extension has been designed around both their current lifestyle and the way their needs will change over time. A new master suite, additional bedrooms and guest accommodation will provide greater space and privacy, with ensuites serving the guest suite, one of the children's bedrooms and the new master suite. The bathroom and laundry will also be redesigned, while the kitchen, dining and living spaces will be brought together with a much stronger connection to the outdoor living areas.
The result will be a home designed specifically around this family and the life they are building in Brooklyn. Rather than eventually outgrowing their home, thoughtful residential design will give them the space, flexibility and functionality to stay in the neighbourhood they love as their family grows.
